Kickoff Meeting & Trip Updates:
- by Gene Mares
Members,
I want to report the October 6th kick off meeting was a great success. We had over 85 in attendance and 65 new or returning membership applications completed at the meeting. This turned into an overwhelming rush upon the trip leaders who set a record number of signups not seen in several years! This proved difficult for the trip leaders to keep up with your demand.
“Thanks” for all of your support. With snow hitting mother earth all around us and every resort on our schedule has seen early snow covering their base areas. The season is looking very promising! As mentioned at the meeting, we have a schedule which includes several big mountain skiing resorts throughout the NW, SW and Eastern Sierra Mountains. These resorts offer fantastic, exciting, and memory making runs suited for skiers of all abilities. All of our resorts are favored by a mild La Nina weather pattern. The array of resorts you will find difficult to match by any ski club. The accommodation selection is the best I have seen. This schedule will offer you a “one in only chance” for several years to come. It was a challenging schedule to put together and your trip leaders bared their knuckles to make it happen.
Current Trip Status as of October 6 meeting:
Oktoberfest:
Leah reports 41 attended and a couple missed the bus. What they missed was a great celebration in the German tradition. What usually occurs over three days, we packed it into one. Our “first class” Trip Leader put forth a great event.
Hike, Wine & Dine:
Diane and Don were overcome with the enthusiastic support for this fall breathe of fresh air, great appe’s, and fine wine. They had 23 sign up and a few more will undoubtedly show up in the tasting room. So, there is only a day left to procure your admission.
New Year’s “Skicentric” Ski & Party:
Amber and Gail had 21 sign up for this unique car pool ski trip to Mission Ridge. You will be hard pressed to find a better lift ticket price honoring the resort’s 50th Anniversary. Don’t miss all the festivities the “B&G” team have in store for you to ski in the New Year.
Taos, NM:
I for one was caught off guard for the response to this fly away trip. I know the membership have been after me, well for a decade, to repeat this trip. All the elements for a great trip came together and 36 lucky members signed up. We did it on Taos’ 50th Anniversary and are repeating it on their 60th. I will be taking standbys to attend.
Whitefish, Mt:
Scott was like a “one armed wallpaper hanger”. He was just pushed to the limit and a bit further. We have 46 signed up and working to slightly increase the number. He has promised us at least one bountiful powder dump as last year. It is an excellent package with train ride, first class accommodation, “big mountain” skiing, and explore a fun loving town.
Mission Ridge Ski Bus:
Reade was hit with 12 early sign ups for this trip. As mentioned, Mission Ridge has extended to us a very favorable lift ticket price for our past support of their resort and 50th Anniversary celebration. This is a pick your “Powder Thursday” bus trip each Thursday the month in February. Since, the resort is closed Tuesday and Wednesday, you will have fresh tracks pretty much all day on the uncrowded slopes. You can sign up for one day or all four days. If the demand is such, we can increase the size of the bus to accommodate you.
Bluewood Family Weekend:
Bill was hit with 12 signups for this unique family ski trip which includes lift tickets; camp style lodging at Camp Touchet; all day access to Vintner’s Ridge snow cat skiing with your personal guide and owner Mike Stephenson; wine/cheese social; spaghetti feed; and s’mores by the fire pit. You can’t pack more into two days of dry snow skiing for all.
Red Mountain, BC:
Joe was caught by surprise at the response to this bus trip to an expanded Red Mt resort. More beginner and intermediate terrain is available as well as some challenging chutes, bowls, glades, and tree skiing. The hot tub on your balcony of newly opened Slalom Creek premium condos will be a welcome restorative breather. There are 28 signed up and we are working to expand the trip to accommodate a few more.
Big Sky, MT:
Dave has 12 signed up for the second largest in acreage ski resort while offering the biggest “big mountain” skiing experience available in the USA. This bus trip will drop you off at the world famous ski in/out Huntley Lodge where your bags will be whisked away to your room. You can enjoy a welcome drink in Chet’s Lounge with Chet Huntley’s favorite chair. You will awake and find a “to die for” breakfast buffet ready to stoke you up as you look out at Lone Peak pulling at your ski legs to hurry up. It is steps away from the mountain village après ski scene. This is a “one-of-a-kind” scenic, uncrowded skiing adventure to talk about for years.
Mammoth Mt, CA:
Mike transitioned this excellent fly away trip to Jay Reinhardt. We are sorry Mike had to pass the baton, since he put a lot sweat into making this trip a reality. Jay reports 10 signed up to go to this Eastern Sierra Mecca. At 11,053 feet, Mammoth boasts the highest summit of any California resort, making for deeper, higher quality snow, beautiful views and with 3,500 skiable acres, 400 inches of snowfall and an average of 300 days of sunshine per year, what’s not to enjoy. Ski out to Mammoth’s front or back side, but you will ski in to your Juniper Springs Resort spacious two-bedroom fully equipped condo at day’s end with access to heated indoor swimming pools or outdoor hot tubs, and enjoy the alpenglow from your balcony.
So, if you held back, this is your opportunity to contact the respective trip leader to get in on one of the best big mountain, first class accommodation, skiing adventures this club has offered. He who snoozes, well loses those memories of which keep guys like Bill, Max, Les, and others coming back year-after-year. Put you pencil to pad and join in the fun!
